The Billion Dollar Movie Awards

Inspiration

Leonardo DiCaprio is the inspiration for the Billion Dollar Movie Awards. In 1997 Titanic generated $3 billion in revenue in the box office, when adjusted for inflation. Titanic won a record 11 Oscars, equal to Ben Hur. Leonardo DiCaprio played a pivotal role in the box office success of Titanic. He was the focal point of the movie, carrying its emotional energy throughout the movie.

Despite the importance of Leo to Titanic, he did not win any major movie awards for this acting performance. With Titanic having such meteoric box office success, Leo deserved an award for his acting brilliance in this movie. These awards were created to recognize Leo's genius in helping to create Titanic, a movie loved by millions of people.

Awards

The Billion Dollar Movie Awards honor the key people that created movies that make over a billion dollars in the worldwide box office. The Billion Dollar Movie Award is presented to the Writers, Producers, Studio Heads, Directors and Stars of these billion dollar movies. The stars of each movie are determined as the actors who played characters that were pivotal to the financial success of the movie. The Billion Dollar Movie Awards have been retrospectively awarded to every billion dollar from Titanic in 1997 to the present.

The movies are determined by their box office performance adjusted for inflation. This box office information is sources from several public websites. From 2013 onwards, no adjustment for inflation has been made to box office revenue to compare movie revenues to 2013 values. This allows more movies to qualify for the awards in the future as box office revenues naturally increase with inflation.

Founder

These awards were founded in 2013 by Steve Jasmine. I am an expert in the creation of billion dollar grossing movies. From years of studying billion dollar grossing movies I realized that the creative genius required to achieve these significant box office results deserves to be honored. Billion Dollar Grossing Movies

These are the movies since Titanic, that have grossed over one billion USA dollars in the worldwide box office. All of the pre-2013 movies have their worldwide box office revenues adjusted by inflation to 2013 values, ast his was the inaugural year of the awards. The box office revenues for the movies after 2013 are those from the year of release of the movie.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why are these awards only for billion dollar grossing movies?

There are many determinants of what makes a movie great. There are movie critics. There is the website Rotten Tomatoes. There are articles in newspapers, magazines and online. There are the views of people on television. There is also the money that people spend to see a movie. For a movie to make over a billion dollars in the box office, millions of people have to see it then recommend it to their friends. The Billion Dollar Movie Awards honor movies that have won the appreciation of the greatest movie going audience. As an arbitrary number, these awards honor those movies that made over one billion dollars in the box office.

Q: How are these awards different from other movie awards?

There are many international movie awards. They honor movies, and the people that make those movies, based on different criterion. The movies are voted for by a group of judges. These are typically people involved in the movie industry and journalists and critics that write about movies. These movie awards are therefore people in the movie industry giving awards to other people in the movie industry. The Billion Dollar Movie Awards are based on the box office success of movies. These awards are therefore about people outside of the movie industry, awarding people in the movie industry. The Billion Dollar Movie Awards are about the movie going audience voting for each movie by paying to see it in the theater. Therefore these awards are determined by a paying audience vote.

Q: Why are the box office numbers on this website different to other websites?

The box office numbers on this website are adjusted for inflation. That allows for a comparison of past movie revenues to the revenues of movies made in 2013.

Q: What determines which stars win the award?

The stars chosen for each movie are those stars that portrayed characters that were pivotal to the box office success of each movie. While this is a subjective choice, Steve Jasmine is an expert on billion dollar movies and he makes that choice taking into consideration his billion dollar movie analysis experience. Generally the stars chosen to be awarded are those appearing first on the IMDBPro page for the movie.

Q: Why do the Billion Dollar Movie Awards start from 1997?

The idea was to create a movie award that honored Leonardo DiCaprio for his acting genius in the movie Titanic. Therefore the awards start from this date.

Q: Why do you award the studio heads?

The Billion Dollar Movie Awards is designed to award the key people that helped create the outstanding box office success of billion dollar grossing movies. This creative process starts with the writer who creates the screenplay. They give this to a producer who presents the idea to a movie studio. The studio head and their team then approve the movie for production. A director is hired by the studio and the producers. The director, the producers and the studio then choose the stars. The studio finances the movie and it goes into production. The studio head is an integral part of the creative process. For movie budgets between $100m and $250m the studio head makes the final decision on these investments. Therefore studio heads help to create billion dollar movies.
